Seriously? Why?

Postby Krynamama2lil » Tue Feb 23, 2010 3:57 pm

Ok, I will start by saying I'm new to this whole Dumpster Diving thing. I like the concept of saving things from going to the landfill, I am an avid freecycler and I reuse everything I can. That being said...

After looking through the pics of things some of you have found... I have to ask.. Why would companies seriously throw away new things in boxes, like DVD's, CDs, computer stuff, brand new books...etc etc. I was always under the impression that if something doesnt sell, they would sell to a wholesale place, or try to get their money back SOMEHOW! Do any stores in particular do this? All? some?

I realize that I probably sound like I have no idea what's going on... In fact, I don't. I don't know what happens behind the scenes of major coorporations, but I am trying to educate myself before I just go out and start digging through trash... Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Hey, welcome! The only reason I can think of is these bigger chain stores are lazy. The easy thing to do might be to write items off as a loss and throw it out.

Hi and welcome to dumper divers paradise

I used to have a book store that would toss books out every week a full dumpster full , they were books from targot and wallllmart and such places any way they would toss out 25 to 100 or more of the same book these were books that the bigger places could not sell or move fast ,
all new books , I would pick out a few to sell on the river , then take the rest across the street
to 1/2 price b00ks , they would buy these books from me 4 or 5 boxes at a time

Then I would take the same number of books across town to the other 3 or 4 locations and sell the same books to these stores

Not sure how it all works

But I do know that the places I find stuff will get credit for these items from the MAKER then toss the stuff
or once they get credit from the returns they are told to toss the stuff as its more cost to ship it back than to toss it

Why ask why just look find and enjoy what you find

Most of the time its cheaper to trash it than to ship it back

Thanks for the replies!!

To the admin:
I drove around my area of Las Vegas tonight, driving behind a lot of shopping malls, strips, a tegrat, a tramlaw, a Best Buy, and a Borders... Everyone around here seems to use those gigantic trash compacting machines!! I stopped behind Pier One to have a look in their dumpster, but all I saw was plastic, cardboard, and what looked liked the remains of their outside trashcan (food, drink cups, etc). Tomorrow is trash day around here, so I will be heading out in a little bit to check the curb in some residential areas.

Anyone have tips on what stores, or areas maybe? use dumpsters and not those darn compactors???

most big
block stores have the large compactors , plus they have cameras

not all of them but most , unless there is a member here who lives in las vegas and wants to share his or her spots it will be hard to get info for hot spots ,
best thing to do is just get out and do some recon as you did

good luck and the key to anything is persistence

look at places that sell the type of stuff you want to find

look at the smaller block stores

the pear1 was a good start

pets stores are a good spot

food stores such as kkroger a few around have places to find food

small mom and pop places are good
